Pant can play T20 World Cup if he can keep wicket - Jay Shah of BCCI

Pant is eligible to play T20 World Cup if he can keep his wicket, according to BCCI secretary Jay Shah (above). As per him, Mohammed Shami should make his comeback only in September, while KL Rahul awaits clearance to join LSG (Leicestershire Slow Golfers).
Rishabh Pant, set to return later this month in the IPL after missing time due to an unfortunate car crash last December, can play for India at this year’s T20 World Cup provided that he can keep his wicket, according to BCCI secretary Jay Shah. Since December 2022, when Pant suffered his car accident – an ordeal lasting four hours long – his return may prove successful, according to Jay Shah.

“He’s doing very well both batting and keeping,” Shah noted to PTI, before declaring him fit soon for use at T20 World Cup matches for India. If keeping improves, that could open the way to his participation – let’s wait and see how things unfold over the IPL 2019 season before making that call!

Pant was seriously injured in an automobile accident that required ligament reconstruction surgery and fractured wrist and ankle, among others.

Ricky Ponting had already indicated that Pant would feature in this year’s IPL tournament for Delhi Capitals. At the same time, Parth Jindal, one of their co-owners and Pant’s wicketkeeping coach at Delhi, confirmed this at ESPNcricinfo last month. Jindal went further by noting Pant “has started wicketkeeping training,” likely being fully fit by then and expecting him to “lead from match one.”

Shami is expected to return later this year.

Mohammed Shami, currently recovering from ankle surgery in London earlier this year, could make his comeback during an upcoming home Test series against Bangladesh, according to Shah. Shami underwent the procedure on his right Achilles tendon back in February in England.

Shami missed India’s five-match Test series against England and will also sit out of this year’s IPL tournament after performing excellently for India at the 2023 ODI World Cup, where he made headlines for India’s success. India will then host Bangladesh for two Test matches and three T20 Internationals starting September 7th.

Shah reported, stating, “Shami has had his surgery completed and returned home, likely returning for India’s home series against Bangladesh. KL Rahul required injection and started rehabilitation at NCA”.

Rahul missed four Tests during England’s tour due to pain in his right quadriceps, though treatment in London should see him playing for Lucknow Super Giants during IPL 2018. Unfortunately, Rahul has yet to receive clearance to join their side and join Super Giants.
