The Chennai Super Kings and the Royal Challengers Bangalore kept their chances alive for reaching the playoffs of IPL 2024 by defeating the Rajasthan Royals and the Delhi Capitals respectively in front of their home fans on Sunday (May 12). With seven wins out of the 13 matches played so far, CSK has moved to third place in the points table, while RCB has reached the 5th position with six wins in 13 matches. CSK and RCB will now face each other in their final league stage match on May 18, which will be held at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore. This match could be a virtual knockout, but there is also a possibility that both teams could reach the playoffs.
IPL 2024 Playoffs Scenario
In the first scenario: If RCB defeats CSK by at least 18 runs or achieves the target in 18.1 overs, they will surpass CSK’s net run rate (NRR) and stay ahead of them in the points table despite having the same 14 points.
Second scenario: Sunrisers Hyderabad already has 14 points in 12 matches, and their next two matches are against the Gujarat Titans (May 16) and the Punjab Kings (May 19). If they lose both matches, they will also finish the league stage with 14 points.
Third scenario: Apart from SRH’s results, CSK and RCB will also need to keep an eye on the results of DC, LSG, and GT matches. They would hope that LSG defeats DC on May 14 but suffers a significant loss against the Mumbai Indians on May 17.
CSK and RCB will also need KKR to defeat GT on May 13 and then GT to defeat SRH on May 16. If this happens, DC and GT will finish their campaign with 12-12 points, and LSG and SRH will finish with 14-14 points each. However, due to better NRR, CSK and RCB will stay ahead of SRH and LSG in the points table, and KKR and Rajasthan Royals will advance to the top 2 spots, having played 18 and 16 matches respectively in IPL 2024. If all scenarios hold true, the points table (after the completion of all league matches) should look something like this:
Position Team Matches Wins Losses Results Points
Position | Team | Matches | Wins | Losses | Results | Points |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | KKR (Q) | 14 | 10 | 4 | 0 | 20 |
2 | RR (Q) | 14 | 9 | 5 | 0 | 18 |
3 | RCB (Q) | 14 | 7 | 7 | 0 | 14 |
4 | CSK (Q) | 14 | 7 | 7 | 0 | 14 |
5 | SRH | 14 | 7 | 7 | 0 | 14 |
6 | LSG | 14 | 7 | 7 | 0 | 14 |
7 | DC | 14 | 6 | 8 | 0 | 12 |
8 | GT | 14 | 5 | 9 | 0 | 10 |
If CSK and RCB are to reach the playoffs, the following permutations need to happen:
Date | Match | Venue | Winner | Result |
---|---|---|---|---|
14 | DC vs LSG | Delhi | LSG | Easy win |
15 | RR vs RCB | Guwahati | RCB | |
16 | SRH vs GT | GT | Big win | |
17 | MI vs LSG | LSG | Big win | |
18 | CSK vs RCB | Bangalore | RCB | At least 18 runs or 18.1 overs win |
19 | SRH vs PBKS | PBKS | Big win | |
