Despite his early success, he struggled to maintain momentum in the competitive world of professional cricket.

In an interview with The Times of India, Tanmay opened up about his decision to step away from playing. “I realized I had reached my peak as a player,” he shared. “I wasn’t close to making it back to the IPL, and I had to choose between prolonging my playing career or exploring a second innings in cricket.” At the age of 30, Tanmay decided to hang up his boots while captaining the Uttarakhand team, having previously represented Uttar Pradesh.
But retirement didn’t mean the end of his cricketing journey. Tanmay chose to explore other avenues within the sport, eventually focusing on umpiring. “I approached Rajiv Shukla sir and expressed my desire to contribute to cricket in a different capacity,” he revealed. “He was surprised since I was still young, but we discussed the options. I completed my Level 2 coaching course at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), but I knew my potential was limited to becoming a fielding coach. That’s when I decided to pursue umpiring.”

Tanmay had to balance studying for umpiring exams with other cricketing roles, including working as a talent scout for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and coaching at the NCA. “Studying for umpiring is challenging,” he admitted. “I often stayed up late at night, trying to grasp the laws of the game and their implications. It’s a completely different ball game compared to playing.”
Tanmay’s perseverance paid off, and he is now set to officiate in the IPL 2025 season. While he hasn’t been assigned an on-field role yet, he remains hopeful. “I’m still in touch with Virat, and who knows, our paths might cross during the IPL,” he said with a smile.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been encouraging former players to take up umpiring, offering certain relaxations for those with playing experience. “The board is keen on bringing in younger individuals with practical knowledge of the game, rather than relying solely on older officials with theoretical expertise,” Tanmay explained.
