In a colossal blow for the Mumbai Indians (MI), the 22-year-old star left-handed batsman Tilak Varma, who was among the retained players of the franchise, seems to have suffered a knee injury.
Mumbai Indians suffered the Tilak Varma blow in the 69th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 against the Punjab Kings (PBKS) on Monday, May 26, at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur.

Tilak Varma walks off the field after the injury scare
Varma has looked quite poor with the bat in the last few matches of the Indian Premier League 2025, and overall, he has not had a very good season.
In the must-win match against the Punjab Kings, the rough patch of the left-handed batsman continued, and he scored just one run off four balls before being dismissed by the right-arm pacer Vijaykumar Vyshak.
On the fifth ball of the 11th over, Vijaykumar Vyshak bowled a wide length delivery to Tilak, who lunged across and tried to slap the ball.
However, he stopped midway, and the ball took a top edge of the bat before going straight into the hands of Arshdeep Singh.
Tilak Varma’s poor knock seemed to have hurt his confidence as well, as he looked quite low and sloppy on the field in the second innings. In the 7th over, Tilak’s sloppy fielding cost him and the Mumbai Indians a lot.
On the first ball of the 7th over, Mitchell Santner bowled a length delivery on the middle stump to Priyansh Arya, who whipped it away towards deep square leg.
Tilak came in running to stop the ball. He dived, slipped, jammed his knee on the ground, and the ball slipped through to the boundary for a four.
In the process, Tilak also hurt his knee, and he instantly left the field. Mumbai Indians would be hoping that nothing is serious as he has the capability to play match-winning knocks for the 5-time champions.

Making the playoffs is a big tick in the box – Tilak Varma’s teammate
Speaking to the broadcasters ahead of the match, MI all-rounder Corbin Bosch said Team MI are delighted to make it to playoffs after a slow start. He said:
“Very upbeat. Making the playoffs is a big tick in the box, especially after the start we had. A big credit goes to all the boys. Everyone believed in the team. Tonight, it is another opportunity to get into the top two. Very exciting day ahead for us.”
Corbin Bosch added that the Mumbai Indians players are highly confident and they have a lot of trust in their ability. He stated:
“Everyone just trusted their game to the best of their ability. Everyone knew that we were playing a very good brand of cricket. We were just not getting over the line. Once we started to taste the blood, we finally found that form. It has just gone our way ever since. We have been putting in all the hard work behind the scenes. Nice to see that we are getting rewarded for it.”
