T20 World Cup Throws Up Surprises: Can Asia Shock the World?

T20 World Cup 2024 semi-final

The 2024 T20 World Cup has delivered a real shake-up! Few predicted this semi-final line-up when the tournament kicked off. Powerhouses Australia, West Indies, and New Zealand are all out, while Afghanistan, with their thrilling win over Bangladesh, has booked a well-deserved spot.

South Africa vs Afghanistan T20 World Cup

The big question: will we see an unexpected all-Asian final, or will batting powerhouses South Africa and England dominate?

Afghanistan vs South Africa: A Battle of Spin on Unfamiliar Ground

Afghanistan’s spin attack, led by the masterful Rashid Khan, will relish the slow track at Tarouba in Trinidad. No team has even managed 150 runs there yet, a potential nightmare for South Africa’s batting. But the Proteas have their spin weapons in Maharaj and Shamsi. Can Afghanistan handle South Africa’s fearsome pace attack? Fazalhaq Farooqi and Naveen-ul-Haq have shown they’re no slouches with the ball, and their variations could be deadly on this tricky pitch.

India vs England T20 World Cup

India, fresh off their dominant win against Australia thanks to Rohit Sharma’s incredible knock, will be comfortable on the slow, low wicket in Guyana. Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel’s spin could cause real trouble, while any uneven bounce will make Jasprit Bumrah even more dangerous.

India vs England: A Rematch with Revenge in the Air

However, England has weapons too. Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali are exceptional spin bowlers, and Chris Jordan and Jofra Archer’s cutters could be lethal on this surface. India will be especially motivated for this rematch after England’s crushing 10-wicket win over them in the 2022 World Cup semi-final.

The Stage is Set for an Epic Semi-Final Showdown!

Don’t miss these high-voltage clashes! Catch South Africa take on Afghanistan on June 27th at 6 AM IST and India battle it out with England at 8 PM IST on the same day.

Team India T20 World Cup 2024 victory parade

Prime Minister Narendra Modi hosted a special event at his residence, 7 Lok Kalyan Marg, to honor Team India, champions of the 2024 T20 World Cup. Despite heavy rain and tight security, enthusiastic fans eagerly awaited the team’s arrival. The Prime Minister treated them to a breakfast meeting, rolling out the red carpet to celebrate their victory.

During the gathering, the players encircled the Prime Minister. Captain Rohit Sharma sat to his right, with head coach Rahul Dravid on his left. Vice-captain Hardik Pandya and star batsman Virat Kohli, alongside bowler Jasprit Bumrah, occupied seats nearby. After spending nearly two hours with PM Modi, the team returned to their hotel. At the airport, hundreds of supporters braved the weather, holding up signs and flags to welcome the victorious squad.

The celebrations continued with dancing, multiple cakes, and exuberant fans lining the streets, showcasing why cricket is deeply cherished in India. Even the tired players joined in the festive spirit upon arriving at their hotel from the airport.

“We’ve waited 13 years for this moment. The team has made us proud by clinching the World Cup,” exclaimed a fan who had been waiting since the early hours, recalling India’s last World Cup triumph in 2011.

Team India Flight from Barbados to Delhi

After their triumph in Barbados, the team faced delays due to Hurricane Beryl, staying put in their hotel until BCCI secretary Jay Shah arranged a special charter flight. The Air India special flight, named AIC24WC, finally landed in Delhi after a non-stop 16-hour journey from Barbados.

Heavy security was in place at the Indira Gandhi International Airport, but it did little to dampen the enthusiastic cheers of fans holding up posters of their favorite players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Rahul Dravid.

Celebrating T20 World Cup victory

Next on the agenda is an open bus victory parade starting at 5 PM, followed by a felicitation ceremony at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium. This event holds special significance for Rohit Sharma, a 37-year-old Mumbaikar and a beloved figure in the city.

Seventeen years ago, a similar roadshow celebrated Dhoni’s team after they defeated Pakistan in the inaugural 2007 World T20 final in South Africa, marking a historic moment in Mumbai’s cricketing history.

Afghanistan vs South Africa T20 World Cup

South Africa booked their place in the T20 World Cup final for the first time with a dominant nine-wicket victory over Afghanistan in a one-sided semi-final at Brian Lara Stadium in Trinidad.

The Proteas ruthlessly dismantled Afghanistan’s batting line-up, bowling them out for a paltry 56 runs – the lowest total ever in a T20 World Cup match. Marco Jansen and Tabraiz Shamsi spearheaded the bowling attack, each taking three wickets to dismantle Afghanistan’s fragile batting.

This emphatic win marked the end of a long wait for South Africa. They had never reached a World Cup final in the shortest format despite reaching the semi-finals on eight previous occasions since 1992. Now, they await the winner of the second semi-final between India and England, with a chance to finally lift the trophy on Saturday.

  • Afghanistan Crumbles Further: Anrich Nortje joined the wicket-taking frenzy, dismissing Azmatullah Omarzai to leave Afghanistan in deep trouble at 28/6. While Rashid Khan offered some resistance with a couple of boundaries, Tabraiz Shamsi ensured the fall of wickets continued, picking up three wickets to restrict Afghanistan to a mere 56 runs.
