The much-anticipated opening match of the 18th Indian Premier League (IPL) season between the defending champions, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), scheduled for March 22 at Kolkata’s iconic Eden Gardens, faces the risk of being abandoned. The city is bracing for heavy rainfall, which could disrupt the high-profile clash.
Rain Plays Spoilsport for IPL 2025 Kickoff
According to weather forecasts, Kolkata is expected to witness intense rainfall on March 22. The season opener was set to begin with a star-studded opening ceremony featuring performances by renowned singer Shreya Ghoshal, Punjabi music sensation Karan Aujla, and Bollywood actress Disha Patani. However, the excitement surrounding the event may be dampened as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts thunderstorms, lightning, and heavy rainfall in Kolkata until March 22. This adverse weather is attributed to an anticyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal.
Eden Gardens weather forecast
The IMD stated, “A trough extending from central Odisha to Vidarbha, combined with wind confluence over eastern and central India, is causing isolated to scattered light or moderate rainfall. Thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are expected in sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on March 20 and 21.”
Adding to the concerns, the Regional Meteorological Centre in Kolkata has issued an orange alert for several parts of West Bengal from March 20 to March 22. The agency warned, “Thunderstorms with lightning and strong gusty winds are highly likely in some districts of West Bengal due to favorable wind patterns and moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal.”
Why the KKR vs RCB Clash Matters
The IPL 2025 opener is more than just a game—it marks a fresh start for both teams under new leadership. RCB has appointed Rajat Patidar as their new captain, while KKR has chosen Ajinkya Rahane to succeed Shreyas Iyer, with Venkatesh Iyer as his deputy.
KKR vs RCB match update
RCB, who finished fourth last season and were knocked out in the Eliminator, will be eager to turn their fortunes around. On the other hand, KKR, after a disappointing run in 2022 and 2023, made a stunning comeback to clinch the title in 2024. Historically, Kolkata has dominated RCB at Eden Gardens, winning eight out of their 12 encounters at the venue.
As fans eagerly await the clash, the weather remains a significant concern. Will the rain gods allow the game to proceed, or will the IPL 2025 opener be washed out? Stay tuned for updates!
