“Does MS Dhoni still have the ability to…”

Former Indian batter S. Badrinath raised a serious question for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) regarding whether former Indian captain MS Dhoni will continue as an impact player or return as a full-time player after his underwhelming performances over the last two IPL seasons.

During this period, he has mostly come out to bat at No. 7 or 8. There is no doubt that Dhoni’s advancing age is a major concern for the Chennai-based franchise. The 44-year-old cricketer has often been seen struggling with fitness, occasionally limping on the field, and dealing with cramps during matches. In the last season, Dhoni averaged around 25 with a sub-par strike rate of 135.7 across 14 games.

Badrinath stated that Dhoni often comes out to bat in the 18th or 19th over

Speaking further, the former Indian cricketer said that while it may be exciting to see Dhoni walk in during the final overs and hit big sixes, a key question remains from a cricketing perspective: Does he still have the ability to play every match? Or should he be used as an impact player? He added that this is worth considering for CSK, especially since they have multiple batting and wicketkeeping options.

Badrinath Questions MS Dhoni’s Influence on CSK Leadership

Badrinath also questioned Dhoni’s on-field role, asking whether he would actively guide captain Ruturaj Gaikwad. He wondered if Dhoni, known for being a man of few words, would offer inputs or if Ruturaj would actively seek his advice.

He further added that players like Sanju Samson, who is a senior pro and has captained RR, also bring a strong presence on the field. Considering last season’s performance, Badrinath suggested it is worth questioning Dhoni’s current value.

However, he concluded that if Dhoni has made himself available for CSK, he should be part of the playing XI. Dhoni’s poor IPL 2025 season with the bat coincided with CSK’s worst-ever campaign, as they finished at the bottom of the table with just four wins in 14 matches.

“It maybe exciting see MS Dhoni come into bat in the 18th or 19th over to smash sixes. But from a cricketing point of view, does he still have the ability to play every match? Or should he play as an Impact player? It is worth considering for CSK since they have so many batters and wicketkeepers. Also, as important as his presence in the field may be, will MS Dhoni give his inputs to Ruturaj Gaikwad? Is he the type of character? Or will Ruturaj Gaikwad ask and be open to Dhoni’s suggestions.”

Dhoni is a man of few words. Also, let’s not forget Sanju Samson is a senior pro and has captained RR. So he will also have presence. Especially considering last season, it is worth pondering if MS Dhoni still has huge value. But once Dhoni has given his availability for CSK, I think he must be on the field.”

Balaji Urges CSK to Feature MS Dhoni in Early Matches

Former Indian pacer L. Balaji stated that MS Dhoni should feature in at least seven matches for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) during the upcoming IPL season. Balaji advised the franchise to play Dhoni in around 10 to 11 matches at the start of the tournament, which, according to him, would help the Ruturaj Gaikwad-led side handle pressure more effectively, with Dhoni acting as a guiding force from behind the scenes.

“MS Dhoni’s presence on the field for the full 20 overs is extremely important. His ability to make strategic decisions on the spot is invaluable. While coaches can assist in deciding the batting order from outside, crucial in-game decisions such as bowling changes and field placements equire an experienced mind on the field. That is why he should not be used as just an Impact Player. At least for the first seven games, Dhoni should be on the field to support and guide Ruturaj Gaikwad,” Balaji said.

He further added that with several young players in the squad, Dhoni’s presence would provide a sense of calm and confidence to the team. “Having Dhoni around will bring comfort to Gaikwad. His decision-making will be more assured if MS is on the field during the initial phase of the tournament,” he explained.

After the Chennai Super Kings failed to qualify for the playoffs last season, expectations from the ‘Yellow Army’ are significantly high this year. The team has undergone notable changes, including the departure of Ravindra Jadeja and the inclusion of Sanju Samson, which could reshape the team’s dynamics.

Additionally, the form of key players like Shivam Dube will play a crucial role in determining the team’s performance this season. CSK will begin their campaign against the Rajasthan Royals on March 30 in Guwahati.
