Portugal qualified for the football extravaganza to be held in Qatar later this year after beating North Macedonia 2-0 in the European play-off on Tuesday. Portugal made it to the World Cup for the eighth time overall and for the sixth time in a row.

Cristiano Ronaldo will equal the record by playing in the tournament for the fifth time. Ronaldo, who has scored the most goals in men’s international football, has not won the World Cup to date and would probably like to achieve this feat in his last World Cup. Four players have so far played in the World Cup five times, including Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon (1998β2014), Mexico defender Rafael Marquez (2002β2018), Germany midfielder Lothar Matthaeus (1982β1998), and Mexico goalkeeper Antonio Carbajal (1950β1966). Lionel Messi of Argentina, goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa of Mexico, and midfielder Andres Guardado have also played in four World Cups.

From November 21 to December 15, Qatar will host the FIFA World Cup
Starting on November 21 this year in Qatar, 32 teams, including the host, will participate, out of which 27 have qualified so far. The draws for the World Cup will be made on Friday. Portugal’s victory has fixed the first eight teams for the draw: Qatar, Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, England, France, Portugal, and Spain. Croatia, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Uruguay are included in the second category of preferences.

The European teams that have qualified for the World Cup include Belgium, Croatia, Denmark, England, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Serbia, Spain, Switzerland, Poland, and Portugal. Brazil, Argentina, Ecuador, and Uruguay have qualified from South America so far. Senegal, Ghana, Cameroon, Tunisia, and Morocco are from Africa, while Iran, South Korea, Japan, and Saudi Arabia are from Asia. Canada has so far qualified from the North, Central, and Caribbean regions.
