Bhuvneshwar Kumar on brink of IPL history, needs two wickets for massive milestone

Senior Indian pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar will be seen leading the pace attack of the defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the opening game of the 19th edition of IPL between RCB and his old franchise SRH at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore.

While playing the first game of this season, Bhuvi’s eyes will be locked on to break the record of surpassing 200 wickets in the IPL season. Currently, Kumar is just 2 wickets away from becoming 1st Fast Bowler To Dismiss 200 Batters In IPL. However, he has been out of the Indian team for a long period of time due to his form and team combinations. But when it comes to the IPL, he is being considered among the top list of bowlers who have achieved impeccable records through their bowling career.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s journey in IPL!

Bhuvneshwar Kumar has played 15 consecutive editions of the Indian Premier League, out of which he has been part of 2 IPL winning team, one is Hyderabad, and the other is RCB, which he achieved last year. Bhuvneshwar has been part of the Pune Warriors India from 2011 to 2013, where his performance was not satisfactory, picking just 23 wickets in 3 seasons playing a total of 31 matches.

However, after that, Bhuvneshwar joined SRH in 2014 and has been part of the orange army till 2024, marking him one of the franchise’s most influential and successful bowlers. He served as the leader of their bowling attack for over a decade, known for his new-ball swing, elite death bowling, and exceptional economy rates. Due to his incredible performance, SRH lifted their first-ever IPL trophy in 2016 under the leadership of former Australia cricketer David Warner.

Who are the other names along with Bhuvneshwar Kumar?

Kumar is already leading the table with 198 wickets at the top. Meanwhile, the former West Indies all-rounder was at number 2 before he announced his retirement from the short format of the game in 2022. Talking about the active list of players, we have Jasprit Bumrah, Sandeep Sharma, Umesh Yadav, Trent Boult, and other names as well.

So far, only one bowler has managed to take 200 or more wickets in the IPL, and that player is Yuzvendra Chahal. Chahal, who will represent Punjab Kings in the cash-rich league this year, has 221 wickets to his name in 174 matches for four teams: Mumbai Indians, RCB, Rajasthan Royals, and Punjab Kings.

The world record of taking most wickets in T20s is held by Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan. Rashid, who is part of the Gujarat Titans IPL 2026 squad, has accounted for 702 dismissals in 519 matches played so far for 18 teams around the globe.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s Role in the Current Season

After the sudden exit of Nuwan Thushara, who failed to pass the new fitness test by the Sri Lanka cricket board, due to which he was unable to get a NOC, he will be missing out on the 19th edition of the Indian Premier League for Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Whereas Josh Hazlewood also stated that he will not be available for the first half of the IPL due to his hamstring injury.

So it’s clearly visible that all the bowling responsibilities will be given to senior bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar to get the early breakthrough and defend the RCB title for his team. However, RCB is likely to announce a replacement for Thusara in the coming days to have a balance in their bowling department.
